Champ Qualified Athletes Battle in Bryan, Texas
Bryan, Texas hosted the champ-qualified athletes from across the state this past weekend for the NEXT LEVEL Sports New Year Champ Major Zone. Thirteen of ATA’s athletes traveled east and were accompanied by coaches Newman, Martinez and Thompson.
Haarika Somarouthu won four hard-fought matches in the girls’ 12s draw to reach the final round. In the quarterfinals she defeated the number three seed Megan Hawkins 6-2, 6-3. In the semifinals, Haarika eliminated Rylee Braeden 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final round.
Allie Young earned a convincing opening round win over Rebecca Adams 6-0, 6-0 to reach the final 16.
Colton Malesovas reached the quarterfinals of the boys’ 18s Red draw with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Brian Roche. Liam Leddy bounced back after dropping his first match to beat Prahaldh Nagarajan 6-3, 6-3.
In the boys’ 16s Red draw, Garrett Callen played high-level tennis in two tough matches. Neel Kumar defeated Gregory Labanowski 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final 16.
Keaton Qualls beat Andrew Webb 7-6, 6-1 in the boys’ 14s red draw. Rohan Makhija took down Leonardo Ortega Jr. 6-0, 6-4. Rahul Gorti beat Patricio Alatorre 7-5, 6-2, followed by Kristian Castagnola 6-4, 6-1. Sanjit Kumar won his first match over Dario Bello 7-5, 7-5. In his second match he beat Dexter Walters 6-0, 6-4.
Ryan Burak battled back after a first round loss in the boys’ 18s White draw. Ryan out-lasted Hans Locht for a 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 to reach to consolation semifinals.
Allie Carlisle and Mikaela Pope competed hard in two matches each in the girls’ 16s draw through the weekend.
