ATA's Superchamps Compete in Waco and Addison
Austin Tennis Academy’s super champ qualified athletes in the 12s and 14s competed through the winter weather in Waco Dec 5-7. The 16s and 18s super champ athletes traveled to Addison, Texas for the annual Cotton Bowl Classic.
Jake Berber opened play in the boys’ 12s draw with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 victory over Sebastian Langdon. Berber then beat Luis Cuervo 6-2, 6-0 to earn a spot in the round of 16.
Maggie O’Meara outworked Elena Muller, 7-6, 1-6, 10-2 for a second round win and a spot in the round of 16. Joining her in the final 16, Sydney Young defeated Domonique Garley 6-4, 6-2.
Allie Burak won her first round match before going down to the number 2 seed in a hard fought round of 32 match.
Erik Kerrigan faced Jackson Cobb in his first round match. After dropping the first set, Erik battled back to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, reaching the round of 32.
Breck Spencer earned a first round victory in the boys’ 14s A draw over Jonah Candelario 6-4, 6-1 to reach the round of 32. Ben Smith played hard in two tough matches through the tournament.
In the boys’ 14s B draw, Zane Ritter fought for a first round win over John Jacob. Zane reach the round of 32 by edging out Jacob 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
Molly Fisher, Meghan O’Malley, Dylan Ritter, Matthew Milliken and Carli Knezevich were each active in the backdraw when rain caused the tournament to be cancelled.
The 16’s and 18’s competed in the Cotton Bowl Super Champ Major Zone in Addison.
Jeffrey Offerdahl won his first four matches to secure a spot in the boys’ 18s A draw semifinals. Offerdahl took down J. Stulmaker 6-0, 6-1, Harrison Adams 6-2, 6-0 and Behzad Minavi 6-4, 6-3. In the quarterfinals Jeff beat Tanner Brown, 6-2, 6-2.
In the boys’ 16s A draw, Charlie Shin earned a first round win over Austin Mccasin, 6-1, 6-2. Rob Steinwedell bounced back from a first round loss to beat N. Thompson 6-2, 6-4. Austin Mayo earned valuable experience in two tough matches.
In the girls’ 16s A draw, top-seeded Brooke Hughes beat Nicole Breaux 6-2, 6-0, Kaitlyn Collins 6-1, 6-2 and Taryn Strahl 6-1, 6-2. Brooke’s three straight wins earned her a spot in the quarterfinals. Nicole Karaklis defeated Kizia Buck 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the round of 16.
In the girls’ 18s A draw, Kate Cahill played two hard fought matches through the weekend.
Taylor Shamshiri defeated P. Fumagalli 6-2, 6-2 after dropping his opening round match. Conor O’Rourke eliminated Michael Burgess 6-1, 6-0 followed by C. Bond 6-2, 6-1 for a spot in the consolation quarterfinals.
In the boys, 18s B draw, Aaron Chaffee came back from a first round loss to beat R. Burdick 7-5, 6-3. Aaron was active in the consolation semifinals when the tournament was cancelled due to rain.
In the boys’ 16s B draw, Raymond Traweek rebounded after falling first round to take down the number 5 seeded S. Dizdarevic, 6-4, 6-3.
