Tyler Hosts Champ Athletes to the Ellen Waters Championship Major Zone

ATA’s championship qualified athletes traveled to Tyler, T.X. this past weekend to compete in the Ellen Waters Championship Major Zone.

Erik Kerrigan earned Super Champ status with four straight wins to claim his boys’ 12s Red draw. He won his final match convincingly over A. Tapper, 6-1, 6-0.

After dropping his first round match in the boys’ 18s, Ryan Burak bounced back to beat three straight opponents to win the consolation championship. He defeated N. Meriwether 6-3, 7-6 in the consolation final round.

Neel Kumar faced Nikhil Shah in his first round match of the boys’ 16s Red draw. Kumar advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Also earning a first round win, Liam Leddy took down Zachary Nail 6-3, 6-1 to reach the round of 16 of the Blue draw.

Conor O’Meara eliminated M. Gaal in his second match, 6-1, 6-1, reaching the consolation quarterfinals of the White draw. In the boys’ 14s Red draw, Rohan Makhija defeated D. Betten 6-4, 7-5 to reach the final eight. The Blue draw saw Keaton Qualls rebound after dropping the first set 0-6 to beat Reuben Frank 0-6, 7-6, 6-2 and advance to the round of 16. Sreyas Mahadevan earned valuable experience in two tough matches.

Katherine Spencer reached the quarterfinals of her girls’ 12s draw with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over R. Kamdem. Joining her in the quarters was teammate Allie Young. Young defeated Rebecca Ritchie 6-1, 6-1, logging her second straight win.

In the girls’ 14s, Smrithi Hariharan went down in a tough first round match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, to A. Denesuk. Allie Carlisle went down in two hard fought matches. Jacqueline Patterson defeated K. Smith in her second match, earning her a spot in the consolation semifinals.

These junior athletes showcased the strides earned over the summer. Their hard work and dedication does not stop with the summer heat, however. Look for continued improvement and success in the coming months.
