ATA's 16s and 18s Compete in Arlington
The final Super Championship Major Zone before the start of school was hosted by Arlington, Tx over the weekend of August, 15-17. ATA’s super champ qualified athletes went north to compete in this 16s and 18s event.
Hunter Goertz earned second place in the boys’ 16s A draw by fighting for five straight wins. After both won their first round match, Goertz beat teammate Aaron Chaffee 6-2, 6-0 to reach the round of 16. Hunter then out worked J. Winton, 6-4, 6-2. The three-seeded N. Lammons pushed him to a decisive third set in the quarterfinals where Goertz gained a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory. ATA teammate, Charlie Shin, awaited him in the semis, coming off four straight wins without dropping a set. The two battled to a third set, with Goertz out lasting Shin 4-6, 6-2, 3-0 Ret(inj). Matthew Sparks went down in two tough matches.
In the bottom half of the 16s A draw, Josh Hagar reached the round of 16 with a pair of 6-1, 6-2 victories. Hagar took down Zach Sivalls followed by Grant Murray in the round of 32. Conor O’Rourke battled Houston’s Voigt Hansberger in the first round, earning the win 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
In the boys’ 18s A draw, Taylor Shamshiri took down Casey Clark and Jeffrey Trinh in his first two matches, 6-1, 6-0 in both. He then knocked out Will Stein, 7-6(5), 6-0. Now in the quarterfinals, Taylor fought for a win over Matt Ford in three tough sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to secure his semi final spot. Chris Dale earned an opening round win over Angel Alvarez, 6-1, 6-1. Next, Chris clashed with the number nine-seeded Luke Trautmann, whom he eliminated, 6-2, 6-0 to reach the round of 16. Avery Rux fell in a first round battle to the eventual finalist Gandhi Bhakthavachalam, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6.
Nicole Karaklis played L. Pineda in the semifinals, logging her fifth straight win and earning second place in her draw.
Austin Mayo made a run to the semifinals of his boys’ 16s B draw, earning a three set win over A. Gwo in the round of 16, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3. Austin then defeated K. Davidson 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semis. Raymond Traweek beat Sanio Dizdarevic 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a grueling first round match. Elliot Blatt rebounded from a first round loss to beat N. Van Bemmelen 6-0, 6-1. Ryan Burak and Rob Steinwedell lost two tough matches through the tournament.
Abby Lewis bounced back from a first round loss to earn four straight wins on a run to the consolation finals. Along the way she knocked out T. Vick 6-4, 6-1, and M. Martin 6-1, 6-0. Claire beat Christina Goswami 6-2, 6-2 in her first match in the back draw, while sister Kate Cahill competed in two hard fought matches through the tournament.
