Austin and San Antonio Host ATA's Super Champs
While ATA served as host to the state’s 12s and 14s super champ athletes, the 16s 18s players traveled south to San Antonio for the Alamo City Super Championship Major Zone.
Coach Brian Notis served as Director for the Austin Tennis Academy Spenco Super Champ Major Zone.
Abigail Chiu battled to win her first four matches and secure a semi final spot. She took down C. Otto 6-3, 6-1 in the quarter finals.
“Abigail showed a strong commitment to playing her game, that along with her improved competitiveness secured her a well deserved spot in the last day of the tournament,” Coach Moros said.
Meghan O’Malley went down to K. Buck 6-2, 6-4 in the third round of consolation. Meghan and Abigail then teamed up to win the B draw doubles title.
In the girl’s 14s, Sydney Young beat A. Sampath 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 for her second straight three set victory and a quarter final spot.
“Sydney once again showed that she is knocking on the door for a spot in the 3rd day of main draw,” Coach Moros said.
Carli Knezevich bounced back from a first round loss to beat Defne Comlek 6-0, 6-1 to reach the consolation third round. Maggie O’Meara fell in two tough matches.
Dylan Ritter earned two tough wins to secure a spot in the quarter finals. He beat A. Jakubowski 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. Jake Berber won two matches to reach the round of 16. He beat Alexander Joseph 6-2, 6-2 in his second round match. Zane Ritter beat Keenan Rico 6-1, 6-1 to reach the round of 32. Payton Holden competed hard in two tough matches over the weekend.
“Payton showed tremendous maturity to handle the late hours on Wednesday night, finishing his match at 11:15 pm,” Coach Moros said. “He fought very hard till the last moment.”
Breck Spencer earned A draw experience in two matches through the tournament. In the B draw, Ben Smith fought for a tough third set victory over John Wooldridge 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Matthew Milliken fell to O. Naguib 1-6, 6-1 10-5 in the consolation quarter finals.
Coaches Newman, Strecker and Collins accompanied the 16s and 18s team to San Antonio.
Brittany Brewster won her first four matches to secure a semi final spot in the girl’s 16s A draw. She defeated J. Pinkston 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. In the B draw, Nicole Karaklis eliminated the number five seed Camille Carpenter 6-2, 6-2 for her second win. Next she defeated Laura Haney 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 to reach the semi finals.
strong>Abby Lewis defeated Allison Burckhartt, the five seed, 6-1, 6-3 for her second win and a spot in the round of 16. Morgan Barnhill beat Catherine Weber 6-1, 6-3 to reach the round of 32. Joining her in the second round was teammate Claire Cahill who beat Kristin Brikmanis 6-2, 7-6(6) to advance. Kate Cahill went down to N. Montano 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of consolation.
In the boy’s 16s A draw, Hunter Goertz fought to win four matches and reach the quarter finals. In the round of 16 he faced teammate Aaron Chaffee who had just defeated Audy Frye for his second win. Goertz gained the win 6-4, 6-1 and advanced to the next round. After falling first round, Conor O’Rourke claimed three straight wins and a spot in the consolation semi finals. Josh Hagar withdrew due to illness amid his second match.
Austin Mayo won his first three matches in the boy’s 16s B draw to reach the quarter finals. He beat the five seed Matthew Delmastro 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 16. Mayo then matched up with teammate O’Rourke to take the doubles title. Raymond Traweek, Rob Steinwedell and Ryan Burak each played hard in two singles matches through the tournament.
Taylor Shamshiri opened the tournament impressively with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the five seed Stewart Pittman. He then defeated A. Tajonar 6-2, 6-1 for a place in the round of 16. Jeffrey Offerdahl beat Jake Golman 6-1, 6-1 in his first match of the tournament. He was then forced to withdraw due to illness in his next match. Chris Dale outlasted Amir Rahbar 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to reach the second round. Donny Hackett was forced to retire due to muscle cramping while up a set in his first consolation match.
“I think overall we had a great tournament,” Coach Strecker said. “It was great to see our kids fighting through some adversity. It is great to see some of our kid’s games shaping up.”
