ATA's 16s and 18s Compete in Texas Open Championships

ATA’s 16s and 18s junior athletes were split between Austin and Dallas for this years’ Texas Open Championships. The 16s served it up at St. Stephens Episcopal School, while the 18s competed at Canyon Creek Country Club.

Chris Dale opened the tournament with and epic win over Frisco’s Blake Wiggins, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4). Next, Dale faced the number five-seeded David Weiner, defeating him convincingly, 6-3, 6-1. Josh Levine, out of Syosset, NY, matched up with Dale in the round of 16, only to fall 6-3, 7-6 for Chris’ third straight win and a spot in the quarter finals.

Brittany Brewster beat Meredith Hopson 6-0, 7-6(2) in her first round match. After falling to the five seed, Brewster bounced back to earn two tough wins and reach the third round of consolation. Nicole Karaklis defeated Lauren Schulte 6-1, 6-1 before going down to teammate Brewster in her next match. Sydney Young took down Morgan Lawless 6-3, 6-3 for her second win in the consolation draw. Morgan Barnhill went down in two tough matches.

Jeffrey Offerdahl defeated Shane Korber from Southern California 6-2, 6-1 in his first match. After outlasting Aaron Poliak for his second win, Jeff had to withdraw due to illness. Avery Rux took down Justin Reindel 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in his first round match.. He then beat Robin Chou 6-4, 6-2 for a spot in the round of 16. Taylor Shamshiri earned a victory over Jake Golman 7-5, 6-2 to reach the round of 32. Chase Curry rebounded from a first round loss to claim three straight wins. He defeated David Salazar 6-4, 6-4 for a spot in the third round of consolation.

Abby Lewis opened play with a 6-3, 7-6(8) victory over Sommer Champion. She then fell in a tough match second round, but bounced back to take two more tough wins. Abby beat Kristin Birkmanis 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round of consolation. Kate and Claire Cahill each fell in two tough matches over the weekend.

Also competing in the boy’s 16’s, Aaron Chaffee took down Thomas Gans 6-1, 6-3 to reach the round of 32. Charlie Shin fell in to Nolan Bauer in his first round match 3-6, 6-3 6-4. Hunter Goertz bounced back from a first round loss to beat Preston Poon 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0.

Rob Steinwedell, Austin Mayo, Colton Malesovas and Matthew Milliken earned high-level experience competing in the Boy’s 16s Qualifying Tournament.
