ATA Athletes Take Four Draws at Horseshoe Bay Red Clay Classic Junior Open
As ATA's top amateur athletes were competing at the Clay Court Nationals, eleven others entered the Horseshoe Bay Red Clay Classic Junior Open. These hardy eleven earned championships in four of the six singles draws in which they entered.
Harrison Chiu won three straight matches to win the boys' 10s championship. In the final round Harrison beat J. Ross 8-5.
His big sister, Abigail Chiu, joined Harrison atop the podium. She took down three straight opponents to take her girl's 12s draw, beating S. Thomas in the final round 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.
Michael Holder entered as the number one seed and finished as draw champion of the boy's 14s, winning three straight matches without dropping a set. In the finals he defeated D. Sanchez 6-2, 6-3.
Allie Burak became the fourth ATA junior athlete to win their singles draw by defeating A. Gamble 6-2, 6-0. Allie won three straight matches through the tournament.
Meghan O'Malley rebounded after falling in a hard-fought first round match by defeating two opponents to reach the consolation finals of her girl's 12s draw.
In the boys' 12s draw, teammates Spencer Chiu and Zane Ritter met in the quarter finals after each won earned a first round victory. The first two sets we're split 1-6, 6-1, with the third set tie-breaker going to Ritter 10-3.
Elliot Blatt beat S. Streifert 6-2, 6-1 for his second win and a spot in the quarter finals. Rob Steinwedell won his first round match in a tough three-set battle against Arturo Ravelo 6-2, 4-6, 10-6. Ryan Burak and Neel Kumar each earned clay court experience in two matches through the weekend.
A versatile showing from all of ATA's junior athletes earned them a successful week on the dirt. Look for their continued hard work through the summer months and more strong performances in coming events.
