ATA's Champ Athletes Succeed at SATA Championship Major Zone

While many of ATA’s junior athletes were competing in College Station, the Champ qualified players traveled south to San Antonio for the SATA Championship Major Zone.

Matthew Milliken won four straight matches without dropping a set to claim the championship of his boy’s 14s draw while earning super champ status. He beat B. Bourn 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.

In the girl’s 16s, Nicole Karaklis won five straight matches to take the title and qualify for super champs. In the finals she faced A. Pellegrin, who she beat 6-1, 6-2.

Conor O’Meara won three matches and knocked out two seeds on his way to the semi finals. He beat Ryan O’Keefe 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarters. Rohan Makhija defeated A. Marks 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 for his second win and a spot in the semi finals.

Keaton Qualls won his opening round match in the boy’s 12s over Houston’s Robert Fanning 6-3, 7-6(6), earning a spot in the round of 16. Erik Kerrigan, the number two seed, defeated C. Erwin 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to secure a spot in the semi finals. Sanjit Kumar took down A. Sundin 6-1, 6-2for his second win and a place in the quarter finals. Rahul Gorti rebounded from a first round loss to beat Andrew Coleman 6-3, 6-3.

In the girl’s 12s draw, Remi Immler beat K Phillips 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the quarter finals. Haarika Somarouthu and Allie Carlisle earned valuable experience in two matches through the tournament.

Jacqueline Patterson earned two victories after dropping her first match in the girl’s 14s. She defeated Hannah Duncan 6-1, 6-4 in the consolation quarter finals. Smrithi Hariharan defeated Nicole Johnson in her second match, 7-5, 6-2.

After dropping his first match in the boy’s 16s, Greyson Brilliant bounced back to beat Robert McNeil 6-, 6-1. Garrett Callen defeated Austin Baker 7-6(5), 6-2 for a spot in the round of 16. Colton Malesovas logged his second victory of the tournament over C. Cobler 6-3, 6-1, advancing him to the semi finals. Neel Kumar competed well in two tough matches over the weekend.

Many ATA athletes took steps forward in San Antonio, by qualifying for super champs or earning valuable experience to take forward.
