Houston Hosts ATA's Superchamp 12s and 14s

ATA’s 12s and 14s super champ athletes hurried to Houston this past weekend to compete in this months’ major zone. The 2009 Gallery Furniture Houston Super Champ Major Zone hosted some of the top athletes from across the state.

Sydney Young worked for three straight wins while dropping only one game in her girl’s 14s draw. She defeated L Carvajal 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16, securing her spot in the quarterfinals where she fell to the eventual draw champion.

Sydney competed like a champion throughout the weekend,” Coach Collins said. “Her determination and focus on every point made her a standout in a competitive draw.”

Carli Knezevich responded to a first round loss by fighting for two tough wins and a place in the consolation quarter finals. Carli took down Lauren Bender, 6-4, 6-2 for her second straight win.

Carli played smart tennis all weekend,” Coach Collins said. “Her ability to adjust after her first match earned her two wins over quality opponents.”

Maggie O’Meara defeated Maranda Marlin 6-0, 6-0 in her second match, earning her a spot in the third round of consolation. There, Maggie went down in a hard fought three set match, 4-6, 6-3, 8-10.

In the girl’s 12s draw, Allie Burak won her first three matches to secure a spot in the semi finals. She defeated the number three seed E. Zogg, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the quarter finals. Molly Fisher beat Adrienne Vesely 6-1, 6-3 to reach the round of 32. Meghan O’Malley competed well in two tough matches in her first super champ major zone.

In the boy’s 12s, Payton Holden defeated A. Jakubowski 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 to reach the round of 32. Dylan Ritter beat Sam Stewart 6-2, 6-2 in his first match, advancing him to the round of 16. Zane Ritter took down Davis Plummer 6-2, 6-3 to reach the round of 32. Jake Berber was forced to withdraw due to injury.

In the boy’s 14s, Breck Spencer battled Connor Lafavre in his second match. Lafavre edged him out in a hard fought match for the win, 6-4, 7-6(3). Ben Smith competed well in two matches over the weekend.

Look for these junior athletes to build on these successes throughout the summer months. Enter now for the Summer Grand Slam SCMZ, which is the June super champ tournament for all ages. The deadline is May 17!!
