ATA's Superchamp 16s and 18s Compete in Dallas; Davis Takes the Title
ATA’s super champ qualified athletes drove to Dallas this past weekend to compete in the May major zone. The Dallas Tennis Association Spring Super Championship Junior Major Zone welcomed the top 16s and 18s players from across the state.
Blake Davis stormed through his boy’s 18s draw to take the tournament title and claim his third consecutive major zone championship. Blake beat ATA teammate Avery Rux 6-2, 7-5, who fought to earn four straight wins to secure his spot in the finals.
Charlie Shin battled his way through the boy’s 18s B draw, claiming a place in the finals with four straight wins. He defeated the number 2 seed Travis Zappia 6-1, 6-1 in the semi finals.
In the boy’s 16s A draw, Hunter Goertz took down Austin Jones 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, for his second straight three set win and a spot in the quarter finals. Josh Hagar and Conor O’Rourke each earned first round victories, creating a round of 32 match up between the two. After splitting the first two sets, Hagar took the decisive third for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win.
Matthew Sparks and Aaron Chaffee each responded to first round losses by taking two consecutive split set victories. Each claimed spots in the consolation quarter finals.
In the boy’s 16s B draw, Austin Mayo beat Zach Mamitz 6-2, 6-3 to reach the round of 32. Elliot Blatt took three straight matches after a first round loss to reach the consolation semi finals. In his second match, he defeated ATA teammate Rob Steinwedell, 6-3, 6-4. Ryan Burak gained valuable experience in two tough matches over the weekend.
Kate Cahill battled Victoria Deleon in her first round match, earning a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory and a spot in the round of 32. Also fighting for a three set win, Morgan Barnhill beat Kavya Menon 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in her first round match. Claire Cahill gained a first round victory after outlasting Leah Whiting, who retired due to injury when they split the first two sets. Next, Claire faced Whitney Wofford, ranked number 8 in the state. Claire worked to claim the second set, while Wofford took the decisive third.
Two ATA athletes entered the girl’s 16s A draw, each reaching earning three wins and a quarter final spot. Brittany Brewster beat A. Rabinovich 7-5, 6-1 for her third victory. Brooke Hughes took down Jessica Ramsey 6-4, 6-1 in her round of 16 match.
The summer months are a time to make strides. Look for these junior athletes to take steps forward in next months Summer Grand Slam Junior Major Zone. The deadline is May 17th, so enter now!!
