ZAT Players Travel to Waco; Qualls and Young Qualify

Austin Tennis Academy’s ZAT players traveled to Waco this past weekend to compete in the Waco Tennis Association ZAT. Coach Norm Houston accompanied to team through the tournament.

Ali Young and Keaton Qualls both logged strong performances, each earning the necessary results to qualify for the championship division.

Keaton Qualls won four straight matches to take the title in his boy’s 12s red draw. In the finals he defeated the number one seed Garrett Jordan, 7-6, 6-4. Also in the red draw, Ankith Kandikonda took down T. Avrett, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the round of 16. Tyler Wilke bounced back from a first round loss to beat A. McGilvray 6-1, 6-0, which advanced him to the consolation semi finals.

In the girl’s 12s draw, Danielle Cutieri earned a first round win, advancing her to a match up against teammate Ali Young. After dropping the first set, Young rebounded to take the match, 0-6, 6-2, 10-5. Katherine Spencer fought for two victories to reach the semi finals. She defeated S. Digby 6-0, 6-1 in the quarter finals before falling to the eventual champion.

Mikaela Pope earned four hard fought wins to take the consolation championship. She took down E. Efting in the finals, 6-2, 6-4.

Chad Howland fell in a tough first round match to Robert Lee, 6-2, 6-2, in his boy’s 14s white draw.

The boy’s 16s white draw saw two ATA athletes meet in the semi finals. James Seward, the number two seed, won two matches to earn a semi final match-up with teammate Liam Leddy. Coming off three straight wins, Leddy took the first set 6-1. Seward responded by stealing the second set 6-4. In the decisive third set tie breaker, Leddy emerged as the winner, taking the match 6-1, 4-6, 10-2.

Georgia Wright competed well in two tough matches in her girl’s 10s draw over the weekend.

Look for these junior athletes to build on the work accomplished in a Waco, in next months Georgetown ZAT. Apply now, the deadline is April 28.
