ATA's Champs Compete at Berry Creek; Cahill and O'Malley Qualify

Austin Tennis Academy’s championship qualified players traveled north to battle in the Berry Creek Champ Major Zone. Coaches Notis, Phillips, Brooks, Schoenmakers and Collins accompanied the team this past weekend.

Kate Cahill stormed through her girl’s 18 red draw, earning four straight victories and super champ status. In the final round she defeated the number one seed K. Usheva, 6-0, 7-5, to take the title.

Kate played focused and determined tennis all weekend to accomplish her goal of re-qualifying for super champs,” Coach Brooks said. “I was very proud of the way she composed herself in close matches.”

In the girl’ 12s white draw, Meghan O’Malley fought for three consecutive wins to qualify for the super championship division, while logging her a place in the final round.

Meghan was very impressive this weekend,” Coach Brooks said. “ She outplayed all of her opponents playing great tennis before falling short in the final. She has worked very hard, and is definitely ready to compete at the Girls 12s super champ level.”

In the semi’s she defeated S.Guerra 6-3, 6-4. Aarti Bhat won two tough matches to secure a spot in the semi finals. She beat N. Gonzalez 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter finals. Haarika Somarouthu fell in a hard fought first round to M.. Perez 7-6, 7-5. In the red draw, Remi Immler took down S. Walker 7-5, 6-4 to reach the quarter finals, where she fell to the eventual champion.

After falling first round in his boy’s 14s white draw, Rohan Makhija won three straight matches to claim the consolation crown. In the final round he beat G. Grivel 6-4, 6-2.

"Rohan showed great energy and a new and improved backhand throughout the tournament," Coach Notis said.

Also taking the consolation title, Matthew Milliken took four consecutive matches after dropping his first round. He beat H. Chan in the finals 6-1, 6-4.

"Matthew played better each match gaining more clarity over his game style,” Coach Notis said. “By the final, he was playing super champ level tennis."

Sreyas Mahadevan defeated the number two seed M. Jones 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 to reach the consolation semi finals. Conor O’Meara out lasted Gavin Grivel 7-5, 7-6 to claim a spot in the round of 16. Pierce Kelley beat Jack Fyfe 6-2, 6-0 to reach the round of 16.

Colton Malesovas reached the semi finals of his boy’s 16s blue draw. He ousted P. Nguyen 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 for his second win. In the semi’s he went down in a hard fought three set match 6-4, 4-6, 6-7. Greyson Brilliant and Garrett Callen competed well in two tough matches over the weekend. In the red draw, Daniel Howell went down in two difficult matches through the tournament.

The boy’s 12s draw saw Erik Kerrigan win his first three matches to log a spot in the semi finals. He defeated N. Bradham 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 for his second straight three set win. Rahul Gorti earned valuable experience in two tough matches over the weekend. In the white draw, Sanjit Kumar beat Alon Farkas 6-3, 6-3 to reach the round of 16.
