ATA Welcomes Austin Super Championship Major Zone

Austin Tennis Academy’s super champ qualified players competed in Austin this past weekend. The 16s and 18s stayed home for the Austin Super Championship Major Zone.

The final round of the 18s A draw was an all ATA affair. Chase Curry faced off against teammate and friend Blake Davis, each earning four consecutive wins thus far. Curry claimed the first set, 6-4, but Davis would not be defeated, taking the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 to claim the championship crown.

Competing in the boy’s 18s, Jeff Offerdahl took down J. Pendleton 6-1, 6-1 to reach the round of 16. Also securing a spot in the round of 16, Alex Durham defeated D. Bodet 6-0, 6-1 for his second win.

In the 18s B draw, Chris Dale claimed two tough wins on his way to the quarter finals. He beat A. Ishikawa 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16. Donny Hackett played two high quality matches over the weekend.

The girl’s 16s A draw saw Brittney Brewster and Brooke Hughes each earn first round wins, only to face one another. The first two sets were split between teammates, 7-5, 5-7, with Hughes taking the decisive third set tie breaker to advance to the round of 16.

In the boy’s 16s C draw, Ryan Burak routed A. Cuellar 6-2, 6-1 for his second straight win. Raymond Traweek vanquished N. Vieira 6-2, 6-1, earning him a place in the round of 16. Esteban Kauffman competed hard in two tough matches over the weekend in his boy’s 16s B draw.

The boy’s 16s A draw saw Charlie Shin rebound from a first round loss to reach the consolation semi finals. He beat S. Liu 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter finals. Josh Hagar, also responding from a first round loss, earned three wins on his way to the semi’s. He beat O. Canibe 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 in the quarter finals. Matthew Sparks gained valuable experience playing two tough matches over the weekend. Conor O’Rourke and Taylor Shamshiri both pulled out after first round losses.

In the girl’s 18s, Claire Cahill was forced to retire from her first match due to an injury being aggravated. Morgan Barnhill beat J. Nowland 7-6, 6-1 to reach the round of 32 before falling to the #5 seed in a competitive match.

In doubles competition, the duo of Curry and Offerdahl defeated four straight opponents to take the boy’s 18s title. The tough twosome took down Narayana and Putterman in the finals, 8-4. Brook Hughes and partner M. Craft defeated Gerger and Reed 8-1 in the finals of their girl’s 16s A draw to claim the championship. Chris Dale and Partner A. Poliak beat Cantu and Tajonar 8-4 in the final round of their boy’s 18s C draw.
