ATA Athletes Enter GTC Junior Freeze; Young Sisters Swing to Success

Seventeen of ATA’s junior athletes entered the GTC Junior Freeze over the weekend of February 27th. The tournament was open to junior players of all ages and levels, with qualified and non-qualified divisions.

Sisters Allie and Sydney Young each entered the tournament and earned their respective draws championship. Allie Young, competing in the girls 12s, won three matches, defeating Anna Buchanan in the final round 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. Her older sister, Sydney, also earned three wins in her girls 16s draw, beating Mikala Lawrence in the finals 6-1, 6-4.

Carli Knezevich rebounded from a first round to earn three wins and take the consolation crown. She defeated Paige Murdock 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation finals of her girls 14s supers draw.

Smrithi Hariharan reached the consolation finals by defeating M. Bailey 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. This was her second match in the girls 14s champ draw.

In the girls 12s champ draw, Meghan O’Malley defeated A. Ford 6-1, 7-6 to reach the final round. Aarti Bhat responded to a first round loss by claiming to consolation championship. She defeated F. Young 6-3, 7-5 in the consolation finals. Danielle Cuteri defeated K. Nussbaum 6-1, 6-4 to reach the semi finals of the girls 12s draw, where she fell to teammate and eventual champion Allie Young.

Raymond Traweek defeated Sha Huang 6-1, 6-1 in his first match of the boys 16s supers draw. Greyson Brilliant played hard in two tough matches over the weekend.

In the boys 16s champ draw, Neel Kumar earned a tough first round victory, 5-7, 7-6, 7-5, over Ignacio Rivera. William Leddy rebounded after falling first round to take the consolation title. He defeated J. Miller 6-3, 6-2.

Conor O’Meara earned two tough wins and a place in the semi finals of his boy’s 14s champs draw. In the quarter finals he faced teammate Breck Spencer, who also won his first round match. O’Meara fought for a third set win, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Rohan Makhija defeated J. Waldburger 6-0, 6-2 to reach the consolation semi finals. Sreyas Mahadevan earned valuable experience in two tough matches over the weekend.

ATA teammates Jake Berber and Ben Smith faced off in the first round of the boy’s 12 supers draw. Berber earned the win and a spot in the semi finals 6-4, 6-1.

An open tournament is an opportunity for players of all ages to gain valuable tournament experience, minus the pressure of the monthly major zones. 17 of ATA’s junior athletes of all ages and skill levels accepted the chance to compete in the GTC Junior Freeze, a testament to their dedication to improve.
