Coach Strecker Uses Birthday to Compete for a Cause
For some, a thirtieth birthday is a time to let loose. Gather friends and family and reminisce of fitter days long past. For Coach Esteban Strecker, his thirtieth birthday meant a chance to push himself to a goal that would make most thirty-something's gasp, training for and completing a half-ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, 13.1 mile run).
"I did it because I was turning 30 and wanted to do something special for it," coach Strecker said. "In the process of choosing what to do, I learned about Playing for Glimmer."
Coach Strecker saw this birthday, meant to celebrate his life, rather as an opportunity to offer something to those less privileged then him. Playing for Glimmer offers those involved a chance to compete for something bigger than themselves, by raising funds to support A Glimmer of Hope Foundation.
"Since I do not play tennis anymore, I thought it would be a great chance to support the kids," coach Strecker said.
Coach Strecker asked people to donate $1.00 for each minute he finished below the maximum allowed time of eight hours. In the end he raised $2,800.00, all of which went to Playing for Glimmer.
"It was one of the hardest things I ever done and it was very exciting," said coach Strecker. One of the best experiences I have ever had."
The ATA community is very proud of Coach Strecker's selfless accomplishment and uncommon attitude. His hard work in training for and completing the half-ironman all in an effort to support Playing for Glimmer is an inspiration to all of us who know him on and off the court.
