Belton Hosts ATA's ZAT Players; Somarothu Qualifies

With the new year underway, the ATA junior athletes of all ages and skill levels disbursed across the state to compete in tournaments and build on the success of 2008. The ZAT players traveled to Belton to play in the Subway_BBI Tennis Central Texas ZAT, accompanied by Coach Notis and Coach Houston.

Haarika Somarothu won her girl’s 12s draw to qualify for champs. She battled back from an 8-4 deficit in the third set tie breaker of the semi finals, her qualifying match, to win the final six points and the match.

James Seward entered the boy’s 16s as the number one seed. After a first round win, he faced C. Nouis in the quarter finals. With a 6-1, 6-2 victory, James logged his second win and a spot in the semi finals. Jaxon Immler, the number three seed, faced J. McCormack in his first match. Jaxon earned the win and a spot in the quarter finals with a 6-0, 6-2 performance. Liam Leddy defeated J. Cox 6-1, 6-1 to reach the quarter finals where he fell to the eventual tournament champion.

Michael Holder out lasted Jay Sharma in his first round match 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(10-7). He then beat G. Carillo 6-1, 6-2 to earn a place in the quarter finals.

In the girl’s 14s, Mikaela Pope, the number seven seed, matched up with Ashley Ellis first round. Pope prevailed by the score of 6-1, 6-0 to reach the round of 16.

In the boy’s 12s, Rahul Gorti, the number two seed, matched up against Z. Alkire. Gorti earned the victory 6-1, 6-0 before falling to the eventual tournament champion. Ankith Kandikonda faced Victor Camilo first round. After Ankith earned the first set 6-3, Camilo came back to take the second set and match tie-breaker 6-1, 10-7. Keaton Qualls rebounded after a first round loss to win the consolation championship.

Kathrine Spencer faced B. Voss in her first round of the girl’s 12s draw. Spencer earned the victory 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarter finals. Allie Young faced R. Wilson first round. Allie pulled out a tough match 7-5, 6-3 to reach the round of 16. Smrithi Mahadevan met Tara Pergande in her first match. Smrithi came out on top, winning 6-4, 6-3.

Tyler Anson fell in his first match in the boy’s 10s draw. Anson rebounded admirably to earn two wins and claim the consolation championship. He faced S. O’Shea in the finals, defeating him 8-0.

ATA’s ZAT players started the year strong by competing in the Subway_BBI Tennis Central Texas ZAT. They will look to build on the successes of this tournament throughout the new year.
