ATA's Champs Battle in Bryan-College Station; Knezevich Qualifies
While some of the ATA junior athletes traveled to Belton, Bryan-College Station hosted the Champ players who competed in the Bryan-College Station New Year Champ Major Zone. Coaches Brookes, Boyce, and Shoenmakers traveled with the team.
Carli Knezevich came into the girl’s 14s draw as the number two seed. Her consistent hard work payed off as she rallied to win four straight matches while only dropping nine games to claim the championship. In the finals she faced the number one seed E. Schmidt who she defeated 6-2, 6-2. Smrithi Hariharan beat M. Locht 6-3, 6-4 to log her second straight win and a spot in the quarter finals. Allie Carlisle competed hard in two tough matches.
In the girl’s 12s, Remi Immler looked to build on her recent success at the ZAT level when facing the number one seed first round. She defeated K. Peterson 6-3, 7-6 for her first of three straight wins, landing her in the finals. Aarti Bhat beat the three seed K. Landreville 6-1, 6-4 in her first match. She then defeated P. Trebisky 6-0, 6-2 to earn a spot in the semi finals. Meghan O’Malley, the number three seed, started strong with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over P. Herrera, earning her a place in the quarter finals. Jacqueline Patterson, competing in her first champ major zone, rebounded from a first round defeat to upset the number four seed Kelsey Vincik. After splitting the first two sets 5-7, 6-4, proved to be to tough, taking the third set 6-4 to earn a spot in the consolation semi finals.
Garrett Callen bounced back from a first round loss in the boy’s 16s to beat Ben Groff 6-0, 7-5 and advance to the consolation quarter finals. Greyson Brilliant, the number three seed, rallied for three straight wins after falling in his first match. He beat C. Neal 6-3, 6-3 to earn a spot in the consolation finals. Sreyas Mahadevan competed in two tough match on the weekend. Breck Spencer, the number four seed, beat P. Wright 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarter finals. Neal Kumar came in as the number one seed. He beat D. Saa 6-1, 6-2 to earn a place in the semi finals. Pierce Kelley, the number eight seed, fell in two tough matches, earning valuable experience on the weekend.
Lauren Schulte entered the girl’s 16s as the number eight seed. Schulte surpassed the seeding prediction by earning three straight wins and a spot in the semi finals. She defeated R. Taylor 6-4, 7-5 in the quarter finals.
In the boy’s 12s, Sanjit Kumar earned two tough wins. He defeated M. Saa 6-1, 7-5 to reach the quarter finals.
The changing of the year didn’t stop the momentum the ATA juniors created in 2008. These strong results in the first tournament of 2009 were earned through a dedication to hard work throughout the previous year. These junior athletes will look to continue this pattern of earning their success throughout the new year.
