ATA's 12s/14s Stay at Home for Austin Superchamp Major Zone

While the 16s and 18s traveled south to San Antonio, the 12s and 14s stayed home for the Austin Super Championship Major Zone.

Brittany Brewster entered the girl’s 14s A draw as the number five seed. After winning four straight matches without dropping a set, Brewster had exceeded the seeding prediction and earned a place in the semi finals. In the quarter finals she faced the number nine seeded M. Marlin who she defeated convincingly 6-1, 6-0. Sydney Young matched up against Emily Draughon in her first match, defeating her 6-3, 6-1 to earn a spot in the round of 32 and a shot at the number one seed. Courtney Schulte played in two tough matches, earning valuable high level experience.

Maggie O’Meara came into the girl’s 14s B draw and the number four seed. After three rounds O’Meara had earned three straight wins and a spot in the finals. In the semi finals she faced S. Champion, defeating her 7-6, 6-2.

In the boy’s 12s, Dylan Ritter won two matches to reach the quarter finals. He defeated T. Hayes in his first match 6-1, 6-0. His brother Zane Ritter fought for a tough three set win over Collin Hecht 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 to advance to the round of 16. There he faced his Dylan, with his brother coming out on top and advancing to the quarter finals. Jake Berber rallied following a first round loss to earn four wins and take the consolation championship. In the finals he faced M. Matusiak who took the second set to level the match 6-2, 4-6. Berber’s uncommon attitude and determination allowed him to raise his game and take the third set 6-3. Payton Holden rebounded from a first round defeat to pull out a tough third set win over Race Collins.

Payton’s toughness and positive attitude helped him prevail in a tough third set situation,” coach Collins said.

Matthew Milliken faced Jacob Hagedorn in his first match. After splitting the first two sets 6-4, 3-6, Matthew’s constant pressure proved to be to much for Hagedorn as Milliken took the decisive set 6-1. Conor O’Meara competed well in two tough matches on the weekend.

While the 16s and 18s were succeeding in San Antonio, the 12s and 14s proved they were equally prepared with a strong showing in Austin. Look for these young athletes to continue their success at this coming weekends Spenco Open.
