NEWKs Hosts New Braunfels ZAT; Patterson Earns Championship

John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch served as host for the New Braunfels ZAT this past weekend. Coaches Notis and Strecker accompanied ATA’s ZAT players to NEWKs for the tournament.

Jacqueline Patterson worked for four straight wins to earn the championship of her girls 12s draw. She defeated S. Gilles 6-4, 6-3 in the finals the take the title. After dropping her first match, Smrithi Mahadevan bounced back to beat A. Yellepeddy 4-6, 7-5; 13-11, earning a spot in the consolation semi finals.

Daniel Howell defeated four players on his way to finals of the boys 16s. In the semi finals he faced the five seed J. Whitaker. Howell rallied after dropping the first set to take the next two in tie breakers, 2-6, 7-6(5),10-7, and earn a spot in the finals. Liam Leddy won his first round of his very first 16s tournament before losing a hard fought and well played second match. Jaxon Immler took down the two seed 6-3, 7-6 for his second win and a seat in the semi finals. James Seward, the three seed, won two matches to earn a place in the semi finals. He beat J. Colburn 6-3, 6-0 in his quarter final match.

In the boys 12s, Zach Knezevich pulled out a third set tie breaker to earn his first win. He then defeated Ankith Kandikonda 6-1, 6-2 to reach the quarter finals. Kandikonda won a tough first round match over a player he had lost to the previous week before falling to Knezevich.Rahul Gorti, the five seed, took down Akash Thaker 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the second round.

Mikaela Pope played two tough matches over the weekend, falling to the eventual champion M. Moeller, 7-6, 6-3. Ali Young competed tremendously, reaching the consolation finals. Keaton Qualls won his first round match before going down in a third set tie breaker to the number one seed in the second round.
