Mayo Breaks Through, Hagar All-Court Ice in the Clutch, Maggie Makes Major Final
At the Austin Tennis Academy Spenco SCMZ Josh Hagar and Austin Mayo played to a Friday afternoon final on their home-courts. Austin Tennis Academy posted strong results in several divisions ATA staff included Academy Co-Director Cristina Moros and Coach Loren Collins. Academy Coach Brian Notis served as tournament director while Coach Anthony Martinez directed the site at Westlake High School.
Josh Hagar and Austin Mayo won every set they played on their way to the 14s Major Zone final round match. Going into the tournament Josh was not playing his top tennis, as shown in his first round 7-6(2), 6-1 win over talented but inconsistent striker Michael Lyn. Josh "handled the pressure of being the tournament favorite very well, playing better each match", commented Coach Notis. By Monday, Josh found that higher gear, showing pure all-court ability in a semi-final round dismantling of (9) seed Sam Laudon 6-2, 6-3, finishing many points with his stellar volley game. In the final round Josh met ATA teammate Austin Mayo, a high powered lefty with man sized power in the 14s division. Mayo's talent has always been evident, but unlike Hagar who's mental acumen has been a main-stay for years, Mayo's late mental ferocity and stamina is now complementing his physical tools to create a dangerous combination. In his semi-final match, Mayo forced heavy-hitting Grant Solomon into frustrated helplessness with baseline variety and his trademark cobra quick lefty-whip forehand. The final round featured Hagar's experience and polish overwhelming the first time Super Champ Major Zone finalist Mayo's power and determination. Hagar won the title 6-4, 6-2, more experienced in the unique pressure of final round matches. For both Mayo and Hagar, the Austin Super Champ Major Zone was nothing less than a fantastic omen for each players' competitive futures.
Maggie O'Meara combined bludgeoning baseline power with improving game style clarity to cruise to the final round of girls 12s. Beating (4) seed Cassandra Vasquez 6-3, 6-0, Maggie won one-sidedly again, beating Marisa Quevedo 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-final round.
In girls 14s, Brooke Hughes won 3 main-draw matches, advancing to the semi-final round. Brooke' first two matches went the full 3 sets before she beat (9) seed Kristen Adams 6-1, 6-1 in the quarter-final round. Morgan Barnhill and Caroline Henderson won the girls 14s doubles, winning close over ATA teamatte Brewster in the semi-finals and 9-8(5) over Porter and Sutton in the final round. Brittany Brewster won three singles matches, advancing to the quarter-final round with a 7-5, 6-0 win over (9) seed Jocelle Rudico.
In other action, Jake Berber and Conor O'Meara played hard in two matches each. Dylan Ritter won two back-draw matches, each in straight sets. Liam Woolley-MacMatch won his first round over Brien Galon 6-1, 6-2.
