Curry Nearly Takes Two at Texas Open, Offerdahl and Curry Doubles Champions
The Texas Open Championships are national events in Texas. Drawing the best in Texas and strong out of section competition, these events are great opportunities for a national rankings boost prior to the upcoming USTA Clay Court Championships and USTA Hard Court Championships. Head Coach Jack Newman was on-site at the 16s in Austin while the 18s were held in Dallas.
At the outset, it appeared Chase Curry would meet his toughest test in a semi-final showdown with doubles partner Jeff Offerdahl. In that match, Chase outplayed Jeff at the end of two tight sets to gain final round entry with a narrow 6-4, 7-6(8) margin. However, a seemingly unlikely upstart in USTA national boys 16s #268 Tanner Brown beat five seeded players including a 6-4, 6-1 tally over Curry to claim the Texas Open boys 16s title.
Besides earning a notable 2nd place prize in singles, Curry and partner Jeff Offerdahl torched the doubles field. With their closest contest an 8-5 win over Hsu and Reichmann in the semi-finals, Chase and Jeff showed excellent energy and intensity to dominate a capable draw. With this and previous results, Jeff and Chase have set high goals and expectations for their national schedules this summer.
In other 16s action, Claire Cahill won two hard-fought matches. After rebounding from a 3 set loss to Isabelle Rodriguez, Claire first outplayed Taylor Schumacher 6-2, 6-0 and then a talented Floridian in Lauren May in 3 sets. Christopher Dale showed some competitive progress, winning two matches while his two losses were both in three sets. Taylor Shamshiri took town tough-minded Hunter Goertz 6-2, 6-4 and Charlie Shin beat Roy Ulibarri 6-3, 6-3. Zoe Kearl and Sydney Young each played in two girls 16s matches. Aaron Chaffee nearly qualified for 16s winning a second round qualifying match 8-5 over Andres Hasfura. Conor O’Rourke also played in qualifying round action.
In boys 18s in Dallas, Alex Durham won four matches, including a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over (15) seed Samuel Fife, gaining entry into the quarter-final back-draw round. Durham fell to Kyle Roth 5-7, 6-2, 12-10 in a hotly contested match.
Congratulations to ATA’s competitors at the Texas Open Championships. In July and August, the USTA national surface events are the premiere national events of the year. It is an honor to play in these events and ATA players have set high goals for USTA Clay Court Championships and USTA Hard Court Championships.
