St. Stephen's Tournament, Young Takes Two, 13 in the draws

Eleven Austin Tennis Academy players took advantage of beautiful winter weather, competing in the January 5th-6th St. Stephen’s School junior tournament. The event was divided into Upper divisions for ages 16-18s, Lower divisions for 12-14s and a boys 10s draw. ATA Coach John Schoenmakers watched and coached on-site at the St. Stephen’s School.

Competing in both the girls Upper and Lower divisions, Sydney Young defeated every challenger, beating Manuela Duarte 6-3, 6-2 in final round Upper division action, and ATA teammate Smrithi Hariharan in final round Lower division action. In the boys Upper division, Will Douglass advanced to the semi-finals, falling to Elliot Deese. Christian Yonge fell to champion Eli Harpst in the second round. Neel Kumar advanced to the semi-final, beating ATA teammate Jaxon Immler 6-4, 6-1 before meeting Harpst.

In the Lower division, Remi Immler and Meghan O’Malley battled their way to a consolation final round showdown, with O’Malley emerging. Both Immler and O’Malley won close matches on their way to the consolation final, O’Malley winning a 9-7 first set tie-breaker over Catherine Canby and Immler winning a third set super-breaker 10-5 over ATA teammate Smrithi Mahadevan. Before her final round contest with Young, Smrithi Hariharan outlasted Saba Hajiebrahimi 6-4, 7-6(6).

In the boys Lower division, Mitchell Johnson won in straight sets over Tanner Rowley and Sanjit Kumar advanced to the main-draw final round before falling to Cameron Jordan. In the boys 10s, Rahul Gorti took draw champion Cameron Lemond the distance, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. Rohan Daruwala competed in two matches.

Open tournaments like this St. Stephen’s tournament serve as great opportunities for ATA juniors to gain competition experience. March 21st-23rd, the SPENCO ATA Spring Open is another such opportunity. Congratulations to all ATA juniors who competed in the St. Stephen’s tournament.
