Serving Others, ATA Contributes at MLK Jr. Day, Set 2 Serve
Looking over the joyful celebration, Set 2 Serve Chair of Special Events Justin Murrill heard the high energy cries, whooping laughter and sprinting shoes characteristic of an Around the World tennis contest. Calling the event a “great success”, Mr. Murrill brought nearly 100 tennis newcomers to the game on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the UT Whitaker Courts. Some of the best coaches and players in the state served those newcomers’ interest, volunteering in conjunction with Set 2 Serve’s third annual MLK Kids Tennis Day.
As part of the Austin Tennis Academy’s commitment to excellence, 15 current Austin Tennis Academy students served the greater Austin community along with ATA parent Susan Schatz, St. Edwards University Coach Simon Boyce and Junior Academy Director Brian Notis. As well as facilitating timeless tennis staples like Around the World and King of the Court, ATA students: Christine Schatz, Austin Doyle, Hailey Posas, Taylor Shamshiri, Mary Bain, Zoe Kearl, Austin Mayo, Brooke Hughes, Dylan Ritter, Zane Ritter, Conor O’Meara, Maggie O’Meara, Remi Immler and Jaxon Immler helped show first time tennis players technical stroke improvement. While the MLK Tennis Day participants enjoyed the game and the day, the ATA volunteers fulfilled part of ATA’s mission of striving for excellence in all areas.
Set 2 Serve is a USTA Community Tennis Organization dedicated to helping young people use tennis to develop life skills. Through out the year, the Austin Tennis Academy engages in civic and community service, working with Set 2 Serve, the A Glimmer of Hope Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Austin.
