Knocking on Super-Nationals Door: ATA at Laredo SCMZ 12s and 14s
Stated succinctly, ATA Junior Academy Director Coach Brian Notis summed up ATA’s performance at the Laredo Super Champ Major Zone Winter Classic: it was a “weekend of best results”. Along with Coach Notis, Academy Co-Director Cristina Moros and Coach Anthony Martinez were on-site staff in Laredo.
Eleven year old Conor O’Meara “showed technical and mental development”, Coach Notis saw Conor “fighting hard,” forcing a better player to beat him. Conor fell in the boys’ 12s draw to Henry Adams 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. On the girls’ 12s side, Coach Moros was pleased to see Maggie O’Meara “stepping in on ground-strokes and her improved serve is showing dividends.” Maggie beat Margo Taylor 6-2, 6-3, earning a quarter-final round spot.
Charlie Shin played smart and steady baseline tennis, Coach Notis watched Charlie “working for every ball and making his opponents completely finish every point they won.” With his warrior style, Charlie won five rounds, advancing to the final round before falling to (5) seed Harrison Adams. Also in boys’ 14s, Eliot Blatt competed well, “with intelligent and patient offense,” Coach Notis went on to say: “Eliot showed high energy and intensity,” beating Michael Brewer 6-3, 6-3. Liam Woolley-MacMath played “two very competitive matches,” Coach Notis went on to say “Liam’s progress showed when he played Miguel Alda,” losing 6-4, 6-4 in a match that would not have been close months ago. Josh Hagar notched his “best result” in the 14 and under division, competing well and “using his all-court game intelligently” to make the semi-final round. Hagar fell to draw champion (5) seed Harrison Adams. Austin Mayo played in two matches.
In girls’ 14s, Brooke Hughes used what Academy Co-Director Moros describes as a “weapon forehand and great fighter attitude” to post a comeback win over (1) seed Arantxa Hernandez, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Brooke made the semi-final round. In a weekend full of best results Brittany Brewster is “distancing herself from players she had to fight to beat only a few months ago,” said Coach Moros, Brittany won three main-draw rounds, beating Lynsey Maciolek 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 in a close match. Morgan Barnhill beat Courtney Yeung in straight sets before falling 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1 to (9) Madison Craft.
Congratulations to everyone who competed in the Laredo SCMZ. The Austin Tennis Academy is very encouraged by these results, and will look to make more progress at the CORPUS CHRISTI OMNI CLASSIC March 14th-17th. Register now, the deadline for entry is February 24th.
