Waco Championship Junior Major Zone, Berber Quarter-finalist

Eleven ATA students competed in the Waco Champ Major Zone January 12-13th. Academy Junior Development Director Kendall Brooks and Coach John Schoenmakers traveled as on-site staff.

In the boys 12 and under division, Jake Berber advanced to the quarter-final round, beating David Carbo 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Zane Ritter won a hard fought match over Jack Learmonth 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, before falling to Colin Markes. Dylan Ritter lost a very close opening round match to Erik Kerrigan before beating Taylor Posavitz in straight sets. In girls action, Carli Knezevich opened with a main-draw win over Solene Crawley 7-5, 6-1, then fell to (7) seed Caroline Abbe.

In boys 14s, Breck Spencer defeated Will Agritelley 6-4, 6-2 before falling to Samuel Koshbin. Payton Holden beat Brandon Kivlin 7-6(5), 7-5 and Sterling Root by the same score in two back-draw matches. Casey Shaw “bounced back very well” according to Coach John, “but needs to find the ability to have better energy in his early matches.” Casey lost his first match 6-0, 6-0 to Tyler Honeycutt before winning two back-draw matches. Rohan Makhija narrowly fell to Eric Morris 6-1, 5-7, 7-5, coming back from 1-5 in the second set. Garrett Callen played hard in two matches.

In 18s, Daniel Wang lost two close sets to (4) seed Nolan Tatum 7-5, 6-3, rebounded to tackle Travis Thomson in straight sets. Christine Schatz defeated Erica Murray 6-0, 6-3 before losing to Taylor McDaniel 6-3, 6-0.
