Michael Malone Tournament Features Eleven ATA Competitors, Clouse Champion

At Westwood Country Club in Austin, eleven ATA players competed in the Michael Malone Jr. Classic. Several players won matches and all competed with effort and good sportsmanship.

In the girls 10s draw, Danielle Cuteri beat Aubrey Blocker in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. Cuteri then lost to (1) seed Haarika Somarouthu, who won two matches to make the final round. Haarika fell in a very close match 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 to Anna Buchanan. In boys 10s, Rahul Gorti defeated Anthony Tran 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the semi-final round, then lost to (2) seed Cameron Wiley 6-3, 6-2. After losing a close first round match, Ian Yonge stormed through the back-draw, winning three matches and the consolation final. 6-2, 6-4 over Kirby Hayes. Yonge also won the combined 10s and 12s doubles title. Remi Immler played hard in two 12 and under matches.

In the 14s division, Connor Campbell lost a close first round match 7-6(6) in the third set to Ryan Ramirez. Campbell rebounded well to win an equally close match over ATA teammate Jaxon Immler. Daniel Howell beat Mark Bernhardt 6-3, 6-2 before falling to Champ qualified Raymond Traweek. Liam Leddy played hard in two matches. In girls 14s, Jessica Clouse won three matches to win the girls 14 and under title, each match increasingly closely contested. Jessica first beat Carly Smyrl 6-2, 6-0, then (1) seed Morgan Wenske 6-2, 6-4 and finally Alexandria Brown 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. Smrithi Harhiharan defeated Callie McConnico 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 in a close back-draw match.

Congratulations to all of ATA’s Michael Malone competitors. Many tournaments like the Michael Malone Classic are great ‘open’ tournaments that give entry level competitive opportunities for ATA Junior Development and Junior Academy players. The Belton ZAT is January 5th-6th. Register now, the deadline for entry is December 22nd.
