Fast Start at Waco 12s and 14s SCMZ, Brewster Bores Through, Rain Ends Run
“It was one of those weekends that usually only happen after a good month of practice,” Coach Strecker commenting on the Austin Tennis Academy’s SuperChamp success in Waco, where nearly every player won main-draw matches. In addition, Brittany Brewster advanced to the semi-final round before rain cancelled action on Monday. Academy Co-Director Cristina Moros and Academy Coach Estevam Strecker were on-site staff in Waco.
Brittany Brewster beat Katie Davis in the 2nd round 6-1, 2-6, 10-5 and (5) seed Adrienne Fleck in the quarter-final round 6-4, 6-3. Academy Co-Director Cristina Moros noted that “Brittany has been working on court positioning and hitting quality balls with consistency and progress is beginning to show in competition.” Matched with (4) seed Claire Williams for a semi-final dual, the draw was cancelled Monday due to rain. In other 14 and under action, Morgan Barnhill lost a close contest to Auvi Tran 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Barnhill’s back-draw opportunity was cancelled Sunday.
In boys 14 and under play, Charlie Shin upset tough-minded (5) seed Hunter Goertz 6-3, 7-5. Shin won three main-draw matches, and though he advanced to the quarter-final round, Coach Strecker felt that “Charlie needs to complement his heavy and steady baseline game with a willingness to move forward in the court.” In the same division, Josh Hagar outlasted Juan Moreiras 7-5, 6-4 before losing a close match with Kevin Wang 6-7(5), 6-0, 10-4. Eliot Blatt posted a pair of main-draw wins, pulling out a close three set win over Sandor Csimma 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 and then again over Jacob Belanger 7-5, 6-0. Coach Strecker credits a “solid month of practice and good health” for Eliot’s success. Austin Mayo won an injury shortened first round match and played well in his second round but narrowly fell to (5) seed Alex Frias 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.
Congratulations to the Waco SCMZ participants. The weather cancellation will only whet the hunger for success in Austin next month. Sign up now for the January SCMZ here in Austin, the deadline for entry is December 23.
