Super Champ Update, ATA 12s and 14s Show Ability at Wichita Falls
Over the November 9th-12th weekend, Austin Tennis Academy competed in the 12s and 14s Wichita Falls Super Champ Major Zone. ATA turned in impressive results and our competitors handled themselves with character and gave their best effort. Junior Academy Director Brian Notis and Academy Coach Estevam Strecker caught the action firsthand.
In girls 12s, Maggie O’Meara beat Jill Anderson in straight sets in a first round contest. In boys 14s, Josh Hagar lost a close match with Addison Chu 7-5, 6-4. Hagar won a back-draw match over Colton Malesovas 6-1, 6-3. Colton played very hard and with good sportsmanship in two matches. Charlie Shin beat Justin Olfindo 7-5, 6-0 then a tough minded Carlos Di Laura 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4. Against Di Laura, Coach Strecker noted that Charlie “showed the spirit that needs to be the fighting attitude of ATA, coming back from 1-4 down in the third set, battling both Carlos and cramps.” Shin won his third main-draw match over Addison Chu 6-3, 6-1 before finally falling to top seed Michael Morris in the quarter-final round. In the same division, Matthew Sparks beat Miles Smith 7-6(11) and 6-4. Sparks played well at the end of both sets to seize the victory. Sparks lost in another very close match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Clint Golman. And, Austin Mayo beat Tyler Clayton and Brian Galon, both in straight sets before falling to Logan Smith. Eliot Blatt played hard in two matches. In doubles, Sparks and Mayo beat top seeds Garza and Garza on their way to the semi-final round. Coach Strecker observed Sparks and Mayo “playing extremely well together”. In girls 14s, Brittany Brewster won two main-draw matches, beating Joelle Jung 6-2, 6-1. And, Morgan Barnhill lost to Meghan Shea, then beat Leigh Martin and (9) seed Ria Gerger to make the back-draw semi-final round.
