SuperChamp Major Zone Update: Offerdahl 16s Finalist, Shin with a Top Ten Win

Over the October 5th weekend, boys and girls 16s and 18s SuperChamp players competed across Tyler, while 12s and 14s competed in Arlington. ATA Head Coach Jack Newman, along with Coach Estevam Strecker led the ATA team in Tyler, while Academy Coaches Cristina Moros and Ryan Simme caught the action in Arlington.

At the Arlington Tennis Center, Coach Ryan Simme watched as Charlie Shin played high level 14s tennis: “Charlie is very capable of defeating top level players, and this weekend he showed that ability in his second match”. Shin defeated (2) seed Justin Randall 6-3, 6-3. Austin Mayo bounced back from a close first round loss, winning a back-draw match in three sets. As important as any win, Mayo’s high on-court character earned him the tournament Sportsmanship Award. Josh Hagar also won two main draw matches, barely falling to (9) seed David Weiner 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Matthew Sparks won a close 1st round match, beating Scotty Martinson 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Liam Woolley-MacMath lost a close battle 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

In girls 12s action, Brittany Brewster beat Victoria Haynes 6-3, 6-2. Maggie O’Meara fought hard in a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Dominique Garley. In girls 14s, Morgan Barnhill beat Joelle Jung 6-4, 6-0.

At the 16s and 18s in Tyler, Jeffrey Offerdahl surged through the 16s draw as an unseeded upstart. Familiar with competition as the draw favorite, Jeff defeated (9) seed Casey Clark, handily beat Daniel Brown 6-0, 6-0 and outlasted (5) seed Roger Anderson 0-6, 6-3, 7-6(3). Coach Newman looked on as “Jeff made great strides in this tournament. He looked to force errors and dictate more than counter-punch”. Offerdahl battled in the final, losing in three sets to (1) seed Jonathan Chang. In other 16s play, Este Kaufmann, who Coach Newman saw “fight hard for seven and one half hours in two matches,” fell to (9) seed Stephen Katrein 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. Taylor Shamshiri upset (2) seed Cristobal Ramirez 6-1, 6-3. Shamshiri advanced to the quarterfinal round. Conor O’Rourke won two main-draw matches. In doubles, Offerdahl and Chase Curry teamed up to beat (3) seed Poliak and Trautmann 9-7, on their way to the semi-finals.

In girls 16s, Claire Cahill rebounded from her first round loss, beating Madison Rabson 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the back-draw. Hailey Posas won her first round match over Julie Bell 6-3, 6-2. Shannon McLellan and Kate Cahill each played hard in two matches. In doubles, Posas and Claire Cahill won their first round 8-0.

Congratulations to ATA players and family for a strong SuperChamp Major Zone. The Austin Tennis Academy looks forward to another great tournament at the November SuperChamp Major Zones. 12s and 14s are in Wichita Falls and 16s and 18s are in Bryan/College Station, both starting on the 9th. The deadline for entry is Oct. 21st.
