Laredo Champ Major Zone, Breakthrough Matches, Strong Results for ATA
The Laredo Champ Major Zone kicked off action on Saturday, Oct. 6th with play completed Monday. ATA Coaches Brian Notis and Kendall Brooks traveled to Laredo as Austin Tennis Academy competed hard and with good sportsmanship in the Laredo Champ Major Zone.
In boys 12s, Jake Berber won by a mid-match default over ailing Rohan Makhija, then played what Coach Notis describes as the “best tennis Jake has played yet in competition”, against (1) seed Aaron Mao. In that contest, Mao eventually won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Also in boys 12s, Dylan Ritter impressed Coach Notis with “great tennis,” beating Hank Golman 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, then fell to (1) Mao in the semi-finals. Conor O’Meara beat Brian Boyer 6-3, 6-0 in the back-draw, while Payton Holden and Greyson Brilliant each played hard in two matches. In boys 14s, Andrew Levitan defeated Andres Del Campo in a marathon 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Austin Doyle lost two close sets to Carlos Garcia 6-4, 6-4. Though he lost his back-draw match to Ryan Rodrigues, Austin competed hard.
On the 12s girls side, Allie Carlisle lost 6-4, 6-4 to Haley Winton in the first round. Coach Notis commented that “Allie showed mental toughness, overcoming bizarre [draw related] adversity and a first round loss.” Carlisle fought back, first beating Beatriz Benavides 6-4, 6-1, then Briana Fellows in straight sets to win the back-draw. In girls 16s, Zoe Kearl upset (7) Madyson Williams to advance to the semi-finals. Christine Schatz beat Taylor Maund 6-4, 6-4, before narrowly falling to (6) Morgan Taylor 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. In 18s, Adrian Turner defeated Mary Lamantia 6-1, 6-1. Jessica Waite posted a “breakthrough result” according to Coach Notis, winning an epic back-draw final by defeating Megan Pilgrim 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).
Congratulations to all of the Austin Tennis Academy competitors and family. The ATA coaching staff is pleased with the effort of the Laredo competitors, and we look forward to another great tournament at the November Champ Major Zone in Plano on Nov. 3rd. The entry deadline is Oct. 19th.
