Unbelievable Past 2 Weekends!
This weekend, we had our superchamps all at major zones with Coaches Lucie, Kendall and Loren. Jeffrey Offerdahl, Jill Saunders, Coach Cristina and Coach Newman were all in California getting ready for the Easter Bowl (Spring USTA National Championships). With all of that going on, we still managed to have 3 team tennis matches on Sunday and a great day at Scoop it Up on Saturday. Thanks to all the parents and ATA players who came out and served as coaches, mentors and hitting partners for our 175 new tennis players. This was the second week of our Scoop It Up session. We have 4 more weeks till the end of the session and we're hoping that everyone who is available will come lend a hand. Next Saturday, there is a champ major zone, so we're counting on our supers and zat level players to help.
A special thanks to all the ATA Academy players who took on added responsibility this Saturday as team coaches and bank masters. Great job Ty, Adrian, Christine, Claire, Kate and Blair. Oh...and what an unbelievable job by Meghan who not only took complete charge of her bank of courts, had her courts working hard and having fun all afternoon, but also coached our Rec team to their second victory of the season in a close 5-4 match against Circle C!
Last weekend wasn't any less eventful. While our Scoop it Up league got cancelled due to rain, our players persevered through some very strange weather conditions in Waco to play in the ZAT tournament. Texans can get pretty excited if they see a snowflake or two, but in April it's almost unheard of. All I could think of when I was watching this Texas snowstorm in April was..."when pigs fly"!
We actually had at least an inch or more of accumulation on Saturday afternoon as well as some hail and sleet earlier in the day. I think a lot of our players had more fun playing in the snow than they did braving the cold weather on the courts! No matter... we had ATA players competing hard, being very patient, waiting for the weather to clear up so that they could get their opportunity to play. We had a beautiful Sunday to complete the tournament. Congrats to Will Douglass for not only qualifying for champs, but also winning the tournament in a thrilling 3 tiebreaker match in the final!
Other players with strong performances showing great progress this weekend included Savannah Brilliant, Ford Rylander, Jake Berber, Lexie Wilson and Pierce Kelley. Who will be next to qualify?? Georgetown will host the ZAT in May. The deadline is May 1st. See everyone on the courts!
