Ashley Weinhold Wins First Singles Title
The Austin Tennis Academy's Ashley Weinhold won her first professional singles title this weekend in South Lake Texas.
Competing in the South Lake USTA Women's $10,000 Futures event, Ashley beat the #1 seed in the quarterfinals, Tara Synder who is currently ranked #272, and who has previously been ranked as high as #33 on WTA computer rankings.
Ashley went on in the semifinals to beat Nicole Leimbach (currently ranked #611 in the world), who was the #1 player this year on the TCU women's team. In the finals Ashley beat Helena Besovic.
Ashley and her partner Nina Munch-Sooegard lost in the finals of the doubles.
Ashley will travel this week to Newport Rhode Island for the International Tennis Hall of Fame Induction ceremony where she will be presented with the Bill Talbert Sportsmanship award. The Bill Talbert award is the USTA's top sportsmanship award for junior tennis players.
Each award winner must be a junior player who exemplifies the finest qualities of sportsmanship in tournament play as well as one who maintains the finest traditions of the great sportsmen/women of tennis, past and present.
