Tournament Update for March ZAT and Champ Major Zone
Dhruv Sharma and Sean Sanchez both played in their first Champ 16's tournament and they both won their first round match and then lost in the second. We will see some good results from these guys in the future.
Brent Radewald played a very tough first round opponent(it looked more like a main draw semifinal match) and lost in a close match. Then he won and lost in the backdraw. Brent is ready to have a big break through soon.
Jonathan Stockdale played by far his best tennis ever in this tournament and got all the way to the semi's before losing 7-5 in the third. This was his best performance in a Champ tournament and it will even get better...
Adam Chirhart did a great job in this tournament by reaching the finals of the main draw. He played fantastic tennis all the way and it helped him to qualify to become a Super Champ player this weekend. Congratulations!
Claire Cahill wins the tournament! Claire played amazing tennis and went through the entire draw without losing a set. We are going to see some good stuff from her at the Super Champ level.
Benjamin McWilliams came into his first 18s champ MZ with all guns blazing, going through two rounds in the main before bowing out in the quarters.
Josh Minor played in his first champ event this past weekend and stayed focused on his performance goals and won a tough first set 7-5 and then rolled to a 6-1 second set victory…..Josh was excited to compete well in his first ever champ match…he then walked into a firestorm as his next round opponent was on fire stinging every ball josh hit short….josh was in shock and awe mode……applauding his opponents good shots, being a good sport and continuing to try throughtout the match.
Eliot Blatt played the younger version of Coach Newman ( the no unforced error king.) Daniel Weiner who has done quite well in the last couple of little mos…….he made one unforced error in his match against eliot…….thats right one………and his average is one a set…..the guy doesn’t miss and makes you beat him…..eloito competed well but had a tough time finishing as he got a little bit impatient ( which is exactly what Daniel is hoping for) Elito also competed well in the back draw dropping a tough second set 4-6
Eliot's primary coach Vince came by and helped Eliot put it into a learning experience
Andrew Levitan had a great first round match rockin right by his opponent in the first 3 games….then, as we often see at the champ and superchamp level….his opponent battled back quite nicely and took it to 4 all…..which at that time levi took a tumble/dive and scrapped up his whole left let….after a medical timeout, levi returned to take the set 7-5... He then felt tired and thought he would rest in the second set…yes you guessed it the other guy took the momentum and ran with it! Levi battled much better in the 3rd set, however his opponent had the confidence and momentum to take the match…….remember kiddos rest after your match J
Grant Parker displayed a little shock and awe on the # one seed in his first match……blasting thru his opponent and going up 4-0, then his opponent being a worthy adversary clawed his way into the match winning the next five games…what do you think your teammate Grant did? That’s right battled back and got the first set to go into a breaker in which his opponent won 9-7, then Grant battled back some more and took the second set 7-5 in a breaker!!!! His opponent came back in the third and won 6-4…Wow great effort.
ZAT
Tom Orban won his draw and moves up to champ 16s. Lizzie McWilliams lost in the finals of the backdraw but garnered enough points to move up to champ girls 14s. JD newcomer Jennifer Lawton stormed through the girls 16s draw to qualify to champ girls 16s.
Our younger players were on fire in San Antonio: Greyson Sullivan won his boys 10s draw and his good buddy Jake Berber was runner up in his boys 10s draws. Brandon Kivlin and Benjamin Williamson were both quarterfinalists with tough losses in the third round of the main late on Saturday evening. Brittany Brewster was a consolation champion in one of her first ZAT events.
Tiffany Kung, Nick Orban, JJ Botha, Gotham Chalururi all played on the 2nd day of this event.
The Austin Tennis Academy program has qualified 14 players for champs or supers in the past two months. This is an outstanding record of accomplishment. Congratulations to players and coaches for their diligent hard work in developing tennis games and tennis players.
