February Champ / ZAT Tournament Updates
The Austin Tennis Academy coaches and players set a goal of qualifying 10 players in the last ZAT and Champ major zone tournaments. We came very close to that goal with eight players qualifying last weekend.
In the Champ major zone in Deer Park, Paige Poulin (G16) and Meghan O'Rourke (G16) both qualified to superchamps. In addition, Este Kaufmann (B14) and Claire Cahill (G14) had heartbreaking qualifying matches, but came up an inch short. They are going into the March Champ events very determined.
In the ZAT hosted by the ATA, 6 players qualified. Josh Minor (B12) and Greyson Brilliant (B12) moved to the champ level of competition. The Sharma family accounted for 25% of the weekend's qualifers with Dhruv Sharma (B16) and Tara Sharma (G14) moving up to Champs. Benjamin McWilliams moved up in B18. Shawn Sanchez (B16) rounded out the group of 8 qualifiers this weekend.
There were many players in the ZAT very close to qualifying and ATA had some players playing in their very first tournament. The sportsmanship exhibited at the ZAT by ATA players was awesome. 7 of 10 sportsmanship award winners (out of 400 participants) came from the ranks of ATA players. This is a tremendous reflection on the leadership of Coach Kevin Clark, who works with a majority of those players and who was the tournament director.
