ATA Students Raising Money to Build Water Well in Ethopia
Wednesday evening at ATA, we welcomed one of our dearest supporters, Donna Berber, as well as Tameru Abasaba from A Glimmer Of Hope Foundation, to inaugurate the project the ATA players are undertaking to build a water well in Ethiopia.
Why are we involved?
We feel it is important to have a project for kids to contribute to others less fortunate than they are. By participating, the kids learn the importance of giving back. Furthermore, it is part of our mission to give to projects both inside and outside of our local community.
A Glimmer of Hope is our main philanthropic partner - that is why we wear their logo on our shirts. We have joined in A Glimmer of Hope’s mission to empower local communities globally.
Under the leadership of Jan Keeler and contribution of Robert Kearl and Tina Contros, and with the help of Nate and Brett Ellen and Zoe, a beautiful well was built for us to use at ATA to kick-off this project. Donna Berber mentioned that the well reminded her of a wishing well. It is the wish and hope of Donna Berber and AGOH to bring clean, healthy water to African communities, where the search for water keeps many mothers from their homes while they spend many hours daily in the back-breaking search for water.
Donna Berber and Tameru Abasaba, from A Glimmer of Hope, inaugurated the well project and spoke about how A Glimmer of Hope is bringing clean and accessible water to rural areas in Africa. By raising $3000 to build a new well, women no longer will have to walk up to 6 hours to bring home infested water to their families. The leading cause of death in African children under 5 is from water borne diseases.
Mrs. Keeler led a discussion with the ATA kids to talk about projects to help raise the money. They were interested in both a skating party and a tennis tournament to raise enough to build a well. In addition the well will be located in the Austin Tennis Academy pro shop to receive donations.
