Summer Camp : Week 6 : Tuesday
The lesson for Tuesday for the afternoon campers was Defense. Coach Davis took the kids through a classroom style setting explanation of Defensive skills, and then moved to the court to communicate the information in a more visual way. Take a look at the process below.
Coach Davis explained how to play defense from when ones opponent has a short ball to attack. On the left, Coach D shows the place on the court where a player should recover. Then, he shows the footwork, and angle a player should take if pushed back in the forehand corner. Lastly, he shows the footwork and positioning involved redirecting a ball by taking it on the rise with a small backswing.
After explaining everything, he asked Sydney Young to demonstrate what she had learned to the group.
Syd 'the kid' Young explained the proper recovery position when ones opponent has a short ball to attack. She then showed where to move if the ball is hit hard and deep to the backhand. She also showed exactly where to move to cut off a cross-court roller at the bounce to redirect it down the line (a shot known as the Offerdahl special).
After the group practiced defensive skills, they moved to the ladders with Coach Strecker for fitness.
