Texas Open Unfolds in Dallas; A. Chiu Claims Two Crowns

The Texas Open is a Level 3 National event, with the top 64 singles players from the most recent National Standings List accepted to each draw. ATA was well represented in this past weeks’ tournament in Southlake, TX, with 7 players competing in the 12s and 14s.

Abigail Chiu earned both the singles and doubles championships in her girls’ 12s division. After claiming the singles crown, Chiu joined forces with ATA teammate Remi Immler to win the doubles title as well.

Abigail won four singles matches, defeating the number 1 seeded D. Nothaft from Arizona in the finals 6-4, 6-0. Remi Immler and Meghan O’Malley each dropped their first round match, earning them battle in the back draw against one another. Meghan took the first set 6-4, with Immler responding by taking the second set 2-6. The third set tiebreaker fittingly stretched to the final points, with O’Malley advancing 11-9 in the breaker.

Jake Berber backed up his number two seeding by winning four matches to secure a spot in the final round. In the semi’s he defeated teammate Payton Holden 6-0, 6-1. Holden then bounced back to beat N. Legg 6-4, 6-0 to take the bronze metal. Spencer Chiu defeated Arman Dave 6-2, 6-2 to reach to round of 16. Berber and Holden then teamed up to win two doubles matches and make the final round.

In the girls’ 14s draw, Allie Burak beat Madison Sparks in her first round match 6-4, 6-1. Next, Burak faced Meredith Parks, whom she eliminated in a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 victory, earning her a spot in the final 16.

Look for continued success from these junior athletes, both sectionally and nationally, through the summer and the quickly approaching fall semester. Up next is the Tyler SCMZ this coming weekend.
