End of Week 2 at Winter Camp 2011

ATA Winter Camp 2011 wrapped up on Friday, with a morning of fun team-tennis and pizza for lunch to finish.

The group split in half, and competed as teams in a total-game competition. After some singles and doubles, the morning campers came together to learn the championship team: the Danish Devastating Dogs!

After some intense games of around-the-world and Jailbreak, the group enjoyed pizza behind the fitness center.

It was day 2 of match play at afternoon practice, with a focus on the use of mental tools.

The three mental tools coaches were watching for were the Match Card, the 8 Golden (between-point sequence), and the change-over routine. After refreshing the group on the correct way to use them, Coach Davis gave each student a note card and pen and asked them to write their match card for the day.

Tha Match Card consisted of a strategic goal, a mental goal that pertains to a specific component of the golden or changeover routines, and a physical goal refering to a footwork pattern or movement.

"The most vulnerable time during a match is between points and games," Coach Davis said.

Coach Davis explained that these tools are used as a method to learn how to better control ones thoughts during competition, and remain 'in the zone'.

"We want to see systematic rituals throughout the match," Coach Davis said.
