Coach Norm Goes to Camp Glimmer

Austin Tennis Academy Coach Norm Houston spends an hour twice per week introducing children to tennis at Camp Glimmer. While Coach Norm has spent years developing young athletes, these couple hours per week are a little different.

“I am teaching kids with vary different backgrounds an introduction to tennis while having fun with a few games,” Coach Norm said. “On Tuesday, I had children from Nepal, Congo and Haiti.”

Camp Glimmer provides underprivileged children an opportunity to experience a joy-filled summer camp at no cost. They play sports like tennis and street hockey, and take day trips to places like Sea World and Fiesta Texas. The camp offers educational activities including music, arts and crafts, talent shows and poetry reading.

The camp is part of A Glimmer of Hope Foundation (AGOH), with which the Austin Tennis Academy community is actively involved. Providing an introduction to tennis to the Camp Glimmer children is a small example of ATA’s support of AGOH, and the immeasurable impact of the foundations efforts.

“…Camp Glimmer makes the children feel like they’ve done something special with their vacation and it is consistently the number one topic for “What I did this Summer” essays when they return to school.” (aglimmerofhopeaustin.org)

The camp is located in the serene hills of west Austin, on Lake Travis. In the past two years, more than 1200 children have passed through its gates.
