Beyond The Baseline: I Want To Be A Champion by Peter Wang

Beyond the Baseline brings readers the writing of the Austin Tennis Academy athletes. There are many instances where the players are asked to write about a goal, a critical situation, or any number of things, and oftentimes the results are beyond impressive. We hope you enjoy!

Peter Wang is a member of the Junior Development program at Austin Tennis Academy. Earlier this month, Peter turned 14 years old. Happy late birthday, Peter! He is known around ATA for his glowing smile and witty humor. Please enjoy Peter's writing, below.

The lights pound intensely on my exhausted body. Sweat oozes from my palm coming in contact with my light blue turner grip. A shot of adrenaline shoots throughout my body like nerve cells sending a message of pain. My heart beats a steady rhythm like the rhythmic shots of the forehand and backhands.

“15:40!” I cried out loud.

I prepared my serve and give it what I have.

“Out!” exclaimed my opponent closing in on a win.

I mumble some curses under my breath knowing it’s the end. I have nothing left. I looked at the deeply dark blue sky with stars gleaming. I take a deep breath, close my eyes and give it all I got.

“Out! That’s game!” yelled the opponent in happiness.

I glanced down at my shoes and could not face the defeat.

I wanted to cry out tears but there were no tears.

I wanted to walk over to my opponent and shake his hands but I couldn't.

Disappointment rushed throughout my body but in my heart played the song “We are the champions, We are the champions, We are the champions, And we'll keep on fighting.”

I want to be a super champ, I want to be in the academy, I want to be a champion.
