Barefoot Concert for TOMs a Shining Success

Yesterday’s Barefoot Concert and ATA community event to benefit TOMs No Shoe Day was a ringing success with roughly 100 in attendance enjoying the festivities under abundant sunshine… shoeless.

TOMs Shoes follows a model that donates one pair of shoes to impoverished kids for every pair sold. The founder of TOMs, Blake Mycoskie, is a former student of ATA CEO Jack Newman’s, and a friend to the Academy.

“We honor his commitment and drive to distribute a pair of shoes to the needy for every pair of shoes TOMs sells,” Newman said.

Hannah Hagar and Grace London performed live music on the Austin Tennis Academy lawn, while various games and activities went on around them. Hannah is sister of ATA College Prep athlete Josh Hagar, and the daughter of ATA College Prep Director, Carol Hagar. Grace is the daughter of Coach Lucie and Eric Schmidhauser.

“That was my first time hearing Hannah and I thought she was great,” ATA touring pro Ashley Weinhold said. “And Grace sounds beyond her years when you hear her sing and play.”

The music paused briefly for Coach Newman to say a few words, and to introduce Josh Hagar and Estevam Strecker to talk about efforts to help A Glimmer of Hope.

“Every year we do something to benefit Glimmer, and this year Coach Strecker has

his own idea,” Josh said.

In August, Coach Strecker will compete in an Iron Man in Louisville, which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 26.2-mile run and 112 miles on the bike, which is a total of 140.6 miles. Coach Strecker explained his idea to create a mini triathlon here around ATA to help raise some money for Glimmer.

“I hope you guys participate and help me, that way we can raise more money for A Glimmer of Hope,” Strecker said.

The ATA community enjoyed an afternoon of shoeless live music, face painting, sack races, three-leg races, water bottle bowling and other activities, all to help raise awareness for some great causes.

“Enjoy the afternoon and thank you all for being a part of what we are doing here today,” Newman said.
