Austin Mayo Wins Standout Award At IMG Camp

The Mayo family has volunteered its time to the MCB Tennis Foundation (Little Mo) for many years. Mrs. Mayo coordinates player check-in, the opening ceremony set up, the player party, and others. Austin assists with everything from unloading trophies to directing traffic and cleaning up after the player party. The Mayo family has shown dedication to MCB, so MCB gave something back in return.

“MCB has been so blessed to have the many wonderful volunteers at ATA - especially the Mayo family,” MCB Director Carol Weyman said. “I have been trying to think of something I could offer them and the IMG camp idea came to me for Austin.”

Earlier this month, Austin received a trip to the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy to attend a week of summer camp. For a week, he practiced from 7:30 - 10:00 a.m. and did conditioning until 11. From 11 to 12, he did mental training. After lunch, he would play a practice match until around 3.

“The training at IMG was nothing new to me, Austin said. “All of the practice drills and fitness training I have already done at ATA but with more supervision. Some of the practice drills we worked on were; dingles, approach shot drills and coming in after, one person hits the ball cross court while the other hits it down the line.”

At the end of the week, Austin was awarded with the Gatorade “G” Standout Award/IMG TOTAL ATHLETE.

“Austin Mayo has displayed Attitude, Concentration and Effort on a daily basis and has received recognition by our coaching staff. Our coaching staff strives daily to deliver Quality Instruction within a Competitive Environment and provide all of our summer camp athletes with the Opportunity to fulfill their individual athletic potential. Athleticism, Strict Discipline, High Work-Rate, and a Winning Mentality are the minimum expectations we have and congratulations to Austin who has excelled,” said the IMG coaching staff.

Austin credited his familiarity with the specific drills as well as the intensity of work for earning the award.

“They didn’t really introduce me to anything new which is why I was one of the best players there that knew and could execute the drill,” Austin said. “Fitness consisted of running around three courts, stopping and doing lunges and squats, jogging some more and then some agility drills around cones.”

Ms. Weyman was not surprised that Austin was a stand-out at the IMG camp.

“As you can see, Austin made the most of his stay and excelled in every way by receiving this award. He is such a fine young man and we were happy to give him this opportunity,” Weyman said.
