A Chiu Dominates Mobile National Open
Abigail Chiu won 9 matches in Mobile, Alabama to take the title in both singles and doubles at the USTA National Open this past weekend.
“Abigail Chiu dominated the event with her athleticism and competitive spirit,” Coach Jack Newman said. “She had a number of things to work on from her last tournament and did a great job on working on hitting through the court, her serve and her competitive spirit.”

In the girls 14s singles finals, Abigail took down the number two-seeded Chuyang Guan, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. In doubles, Chiu teamed up with Helen Altick to take down the duo of Franco and Switkes in the finals, 9-7.
In the boys’ 14s, Payton Holden bounced back from a first round loss to win three matches and reach the consolation quarterfinals. Holden defeated Xavier Oshinowo 6-3, 6-1 in his final match.
“Payton Holden had a career tournament, both playing and competing on a high national level,” Coach Newman said. “He had a number of things he was working on and did a great job of practicing being more aggressive on short balls and using lefty patterns better.”

Holden then teamed up with Jake Berber in doubles to earn a round of 16 win over Murphy and Schupp, 8-1.
“Jake Berber got two really competitive matches and learned a lot about what it takes to be successful at this level,” Coach Newman said.
In Irvine, California, Josh Hagar stretched a top 10 in the nation player in a close match.
Frankie Colunga, competing in the boys’ 16s in Austin, won two singles matches, reaching the quarterfinals. Colunga then teamed up with Agritelley to win 3 matches to take 3rd place.
