ATA Teaches Tennis At Local Schools

The Austin Tennis Academy was so excited to teach tennis at Lakeway Elementary and Lake Travis Elementary, in the last 2 weeks!

ATA teaches in the LTISD schools as part of the Community Partner program developed by the LTISA Community Programs Department.  It is also part of ATA’s responsibility as a Regional Training Center to bring tennis to the local community.

“Running P.E. tennis classes at the elementary school was a blast,” Coach Brandon Davis said. “For many of the kids we work with, it is their first time ever playing any form of tennis. The QuickStart format allows them to have fun while having immediate success in what we are asking them to do! I think the kids really enjoyed it, and I think introducing them to tennis in this format will produce some life long tennis players.”

A combination of Academy coaches, led by Coach John Schoenmakers and Coach Kendall Brooks, Academy players and administrators pitched in to help the PE teachers introduce tennis to Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Not only did ATA provide coaching using the successful QuickStart method, but also provided a large amount of equipment to the school for their future use.

“The kids genuinely were excited to use the new equipment and had a great time with the fun exercises and games!”  ATA COO Deb Cahill said.  “The teachers were pleasantly surprised that they could teach tennis in a gym in a safe and fun environment.”

The ATA staff hopes that the PE teachers will continue to use the methods introduced to them and their students.

“They are all very excited to see a "new" sport in their class,” Coach John said. “It’s a great way to get more and more kids to play tennis.  They all seem to have a great time!!

ATA provided coaching and equipment to Lake Pointe Elementary and Serene Hills Elementary last spring, and looks forward to teaching at Bee Cave Elementary in April.
