ATA College Prep Brings Technology Into The Classroom

A major part of the ATA College Prep mission is to provide a high-quality education, while allowing for the flexibility necessary to achieve lofty goals in tennis.

A key hurdle in meeting this mission is filling in for classroom time lost while students-athletes are on the road. Aaron Chaffee, while in Waco at the National Open, joined Ms. Linda's Literary Analysis class via Skype.

The book discussion panel compared The Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer, discussing questions of identity and existence in The Secret Sharer, the world of the African Congo as it is portrayed in the Heart of Darkness, and how the multiple layers of the story adds to the complexity and mysteriousness of its world.

“I thought it was very cool to be able to be a part of a class discussion without having to be in the classroom,” Chaffee said. “With new technology new things are possible, and despite small technical glitches, it was very productive.”

This use of advanced technology is one way the ATA College Prep program is ensuring that is it meeting its promise of a high-quality education.

"I’m very excited about bringing our traveling kids into class using Skype,” ATA College Prep Director Carol Hagar said. “Aaron was able to listen in on some valuable discussion that ordinarily a student on the road would not receive."

In addition to Aaron joining class via Skype, Coach Estevam joined the discussion and had this to say:  "I thought the discussion was great because it really helped me to fill in the gaps on my understanding of the story.  I am really learning to appreciate the discussion because I get to hear other people's perspectives."

So whether ATA College Prep is bringing technology into the classroom, or technology is bringing ATA College Prep students into the classroom, online tools like Skype allow students necessary flexibility while not missing out on valuable classroom time.
