ATA Champs and ZATs Roll Over the Weekend

The ATA Champ players travelled to Dallas, while the ZAT players competed in San Antonio.  Four main draw semifinalists in both tournaments were from the Austin Tennis Academy.

In Dallas, Landon Weiss, a new member of the ATA College Prep Program, defeated teammate Oliver Seifert in a titanic 3 set battle.  The quality of tennis paralleled Superchamp level A draw matches according to Coach Jack Newman.

“Both Oliver and Landon played superchamp level tennis in this match, there was no loser in this match,” Coach Newman said.

Tyler Wilkie and Tyler Anson were main draw semifinalists as well, moving themselves closer to the superchamp level.

In San Antonio, Ela Raczka won the tournament in another ATA final, defeating Avery Schiffman.

“Ela showed tremendous determination throughout the tournament,” Coach Brian Notis said. “She played with great intensity, patience and confidence building and finishing points moves to the next level with a win at the ZAT.  Avery Schiffman also showed that she is ready to make the jump to champs with a great run to the semi's and a very high quality match in the semi's against Ela that was decided by just a few points.”

Another young player, Max Schmidhauser (9) fell in the main draw finals in a heartbreaker.

“Max Schmidhauser had a breakthrough event playing with amazing patience and heart,” Coach Notis said. “Max's ability to defend and reset points, move his opponents, find their weaknesses and stay calm in the face of adversity was very impressive and nearly took him all the way to the title.”

Both Ela and Max are part of the ATA Academy Young Talent group, training with both junior academy and academy programs.

Mitchell Johnson showed that he is ready for the Champ level by finaling the B16 draw.

“Mitchell Johnson raised his game to new heights in tournament play with a great run to the finals,” Coach Notis said.” His semifinal match showcased his improved mental tools and tactical understanding in addition to his clutch serve.”

Caleb Rightmer fell in the semifinals, after taking down the top seed along the way.
