ATA Athletes Stay Focused Through Winter Weather
At the San Antonio Super Champ Major Zone, Brooke Hughes battled her way to the final round of the girl’s 18s draw before the tournament was rained out. She earned four wins on her way to the finals, two of which were over top-20 ranked girls in the state.
“It was a big ahh-haa moment for her,” Coach Doug Davis said. “A lot of good things happened for Brooke this weekend.”
Coach D explained that he was especially impressed with Brooke’s performance this weekend because she faced three girls with very different styles, and she succeeded against all three.
“B had the ability to blend her game in such a way to beat each of her opponents,” Coach Davis said.
In the boy’s 18s B draw, Josh Hagar stormed through each of his opponents to claim the championship crown. Hagar won four straight matches without dropping a set, taking down Tucker Brown 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.
“Josh is playing the best tennis of his life,” Coach Strecker said. “He dominated his draw. As always, he had great energy, was very focused and stayed very disciplined.”
Coach Brian Notis explained that Josh won by sticking to his high quality, consistent ball, and effectively blending offense, neutral and defense.
“It's great to see Josh playing with confidence again!” Coach Notis said.
Austin Mayo won two matches in San Antonio, before getting edged out in the third round, 6-7 in the third set.
“Mayo had the tournament of his life,” Coach Strecker said. “His focus and engagement during all 3 matches he played was unbelievable. Very professional, very mature and very energetic. He competed at a very high level.”
Jonah Kral and Leighton Foreshee each secured semi final spots in the boys 16s draw.
Coach Notis said that Jonah played with tremendous energy and focus throught the tournament. He explained that Leighton reached the semifinals by playing with courage.
“Leighton played steady and smart, but looking for more opportunities to step up and hurt opponents,” Coach Notis said.
In Mansfield, Mikaela Pope won two matches, reaching the third round. She beat the #2 seed in three sets for her second win.
"She played like I've never seen her in all aspects of the game: competing, shot selection, hustle, and even some attitude!" Coach John said.
Smrithi Mahadevan won two rounds in the girl’s 14s draw, also earning a win over the #2 seed.
“Smrithi won two matches by playing patient and steady tennis,” Coach Collins said.
In Austin, Jake Berber won the backdraw of the boys 14s. He stayed focused through the weather delays to remain undefeated for the weekend.
“Jake used all his tools and took his opponents out of their games,” Coach Kendall said. “ He competed solidly all weekend.”
Meghan O’Malley won two rounds in the girls 14s main draw in Austin, and lost a close match in her third round.
“It was a great tournament for Meghan,” Coach Kendall said. “She played really big tennis and showed tremendous improvement. I'm looking for her to make big strides in 14s in the next few months.”
It is a testament to the focus and mental fortitude of all who succeeded this past weekend, as the weather made schedules unpredictable. Good luck to those competing this weekend at Excellence!
