ATA Athletes Earn Three Titles At Major Zones
The ATA players competed in tournaments all across Texas over the past few weekends, earning impressive results throughout the state. Academy players Abigail Chiu, Molly Fisher and Young Talent player Brennan Foreman, each won their respective draws in the recent major zones, with Foreman earned Championship status.
At the Bob Faulkner Super Championship Major Zone in Tyler, TX, Abigail Chiu worked through the girls 16s A draw to take the tournament title.
“Abigail was outstanding this weekend,” Coach Brandon Davis said. “She played Meredith in the quarterfinals which was a battle from the get go. Abigail came out on top, but it was a hard fought match and both girls played and handled themselves extremely well. Abigail dominated her semifinal match 6-0 6-0 which was extremely impressive. In the finals, Abigail showed amazing resiliency and fighting spirit by winning 4-6 7-6 7-6 in a 3 hour and 45 minute match and saving 3 match points in the 2nd set. I could not have been more proud of her. She was down the entire match, and somehow found a way to come back and scrape out a victory and the title!”

In the B draw, Molly Fisher fought for four straight wins without dropping a set on her way to the championship crown. She defeated Aahna Reto 6-3, 7-5 in the finals.
“Molly did a great job this weekend,” Coach Brandon said. “She was all business as she ran through the B draw without dropping a set. I was very excited to see her focus throughout the entire event stay steady and excited for her to get a shot at the A draw next month.”

Austin Mayo reached the consolation finals with four straight wins in Tyler, where he went down in a close match to John Mee 5-7, 6-3, 9-11.
“Austin lost a tough first round match in 3 sets but bounced back in the consolation and won 4 matches before losing a super breaker for the third in the final of consolation,” Coach Brandon said. “His opponent was a little younger than him but a very high level player. The match was well played, hard fought, and I was very pleased with how Austin acted and performed.”

Meredith Parks won two singles matches, beating Ansley Boarman and Courtney Anderson each in straight sets, before facing Chiu in the quarterfinals of the 16s A draw.
Brennan Foreman earned Champ level status with her performance in last months ZAT tournament. She went undefeated to claim the tournament championship and to qualify.
“Brennan brings a great attitude and work ethic to practice day in and day out,” Coach Brian Notis said. “Her results at the last ZAT do not surprise me at all. She was prepared to battle and had to pull out two close matches to win the tournament and qualify for champs.”
In this past weekend’s Waco ZAT, Academy player Hugh Cook reached the finals of his singles draw.
At the Arlington 12s and 14s Super Champ Major Zone, Payton Holden won two main draw matches to reach the round of 16. Payton took down Keenan Rico 6-2, 6-1, and Miha Valencic 6-4, 6-0, before going down in a hard fought match to Jacob Hansen.
“Payton handled himself well throughout the weekend,” Coach Collins said. “He played some very strong tennis and learned what it will take to win against higher level players.”
Good luck to all the ATA junior athletes in the upcoming events, and remember to follow their results on Twitter and Facebook!
