2011 - 2012 Academy Practice Is Underway

The 2011-2012 Academy year is a week old. Students are settled in school, and coaches are back into their routines. While many seniors have moved on and new faces have joined the ATA team, the annual excitement and anticipation for a great year ahead is apparent throughout the facility.

Just as players grow and develop, so does the program. This year, the format of Academy practice has evolved and improved upon the successes of last year.

In 2011-2012, Academy players will be grouped into 4 groups: 1,2,3 and Young Talent. Those players will work with each other and the same coaches for 4 weeks. After that 4-week segment, the top 5 players from each group will move up, and the bottom 5 players from each group will move down.

Movement between groups will be based upon daily evaluations done by the coaches, as well as tournament results. Coaches will evaluate each player’s attitude, effort and competition.

“Players are constantly put in an uncomfortable position of being evaluated, just like happens at a tournament,” Coach Jack Newman said. “You are constantly being evaluated by your opponent and given feedback by winning or losing a point.”

The benefits of this format help both the players and coaches. Players are held accountable on a daily basis in a tangible way, while coaches have a better opportunity to build on previous days concepts.

“Coaches have a predetermined lesson plan for the month and can build with the same players on material covered in previous lessons,” Coach Newman said.

With an impassioned group of coaches and players, it took no time at all to transition out of the habits of summer and into the routines of school and Academy practice.
